The theme chosen for this website is epektasis . St Gregory of Nyssa employs epektasis in the sense of ‘stretching forward', and the term is best understood within the context of the Epistle to the Philippians where St Paul says in Phil 3:13, ‘Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it perfection my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining {epekteinomenos} forward to what lies ahead'.
This forward-looking view of the Christian life lies at the heart of Gregory's theology on spiritual advancement as a movement of perpetual ascent towards God who is immovable. According to Gregory, we can never attain ultimate unity and stability in the divine good but simply expand towards it.
Gregory of Nyssa was the last of the great Cappadocians and brother of Basil of Caesarea. He became bishop of Nyssa in 372 AD and his Life of Moses is one of the most important early texts in the study of Christian mysticism.

epektasis will attempt to adhere to St Gregory's overarching ethos as it strives to ‘stretch forward' - politically, ecumenically and legally - the elements of peace, justice, reconciliation, dignity, peace, non-violence and security.

epektasis is simple to navigate, with articles listed by year and then by date within each category.
